Whenever I think of Kia, I imagine something cheaper than a Toyota or Mazda. It’s not that it’s a terrible car or anything, I even like the Kia Ceed. What I’m saying is that the South Korean carmaker needs a little kick. Something to make by-passers bite the back of their hands and go “Wow”. Kia needs a symbol and lately, the company’s officials seem to have given way to that thought.
Rumor has it that Kia may be working on a new rear-drive sportscar. The development of the concept was revealed to Autocar magazine by Kia’s CEO Hyoung-Keun Lee, who pointed towards the Kia GT concept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last year.
Even though the production version won’t resemble the existing concept’s formula, Kia wants to present a succession of concept sportscars at major auto shows (starting with the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March). The feedback received from the public will define the future for this RWD model.
The vehicle will most probably be positioned close to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ and the Hyundai Genesis. In the meantime Kia is also preparing to roll out a new hot hatch. Based on the Procee’d, the performance model would reportedly pack a 1.6-liter, 200 HP, turbo four engine connected to either a manual or dual-clutch transmission. Maybe it will give us a heads-up on Kia’s future plans…
